Please join me when I host a trio of talks about Modern Scottish Art on-line for the Scottish Society for Art History.
Sandy Wood on the artist William Wilson
The society was founded in 1984 and ‘exists to promote and support the study and enjoyment of art and art history in Scotland.’ I joined its committee in 2020. The first of this trio of talks is to be given by Sandy Wood, Collections Curator at the Royal Scottish Academy of Art & Architecture, on 18 January 2023. Titled ‘I’ve an Angel in the Oven: The Art of William Wilson RSA’, Sandy will be discussing the recent exhibition William Wilson: Print, Paint and Glass and its accompanying publication. Tickets can be booked via eventbrite.
James McNaught on the collector William McInnes
Next up will be James McNaught, Associate Director and Head of Lyon & Turnbull Glasgow & West Coast Scotland. He will be talking about ‘William McInnes: a Mercantile Collector in early 20th-century Glasgow’ on 1 February 2023. McInnes acquired a very important collection of modern Scottish and French paintings, which he bequeathed to the city of Glasgow in 1944. Ever since they have been much admired by Glaswegians and other visitors to galleries including Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum. Tickets will be available via the society’s eventbrite page in due course.
Elizabeth Cumming on the artist Phoebe Anna Traquair
Completing our trio of talks is Elizabeth Cumming, Honorary Professor in the History of Art at Edinburgh University on 19 April 2023. In ‘Life’s Rich Tapestry: Revisiting the Art of Phoebe Anna Traquair’ Elizabeth will lead us through the discoveries she made whilst researching and writing her new book for the National Galleries of Scotland, Phoebe Anne Traquair. As with James’s event, tickets will be available via the society’s eventbrite page in due course.
I hope you will join me for what promises to be a super trio of talks about Modern Scottish Art. For more on the Royal Scottish Academy, you might like this blog.
