I was thrilled to be invited to collaborate with Jann Haworth (b.1942) on her Utah Women’s Mural, celebrating women who are catalysts for change in the fields of social activism, the arts and science.
Haworth is an American Pop Artist. She is best known as co-creator, with Peter Blake, of the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album. Her current collaborative mural project involves over 120 people, creating more than 200 stencilled portraits. They will combined into 50 foot banners which will be hung on the outside of the seven-storey Dinwoody Building, in the centre of Salt Lake City.
Haworth asked me to create a portrait of Jenny Wilson, Mayor of Salt Lake County. Wilson is a fifth generation Utahn and is the first female Democrat to have been elected to the post. It turned out that my son is better at wielding a craft knife than I am and he spent a happy homeschooling day creating the top image. It is now in the post to America, where it will be photographed and digitally collaged into one of the banners. They are due to be installed in August 2020.
