I am looking forward to giving the free on-line talk ‘Collecting Joan Eardley‘ for the Hunterian Art Gallery on 11 March 2022.

Joan Eardley Centenary

Joan Eardley (1921-63) is one of Britain’s leading twentieth-century artists. Born in Sussex in 1921, she trained at Glasgow School of Art and Hospitalfield College of Art, Arbroath. The centenary of her birth was celebrated last year with a plethora of displays, talks and a major publication. These activities were supported by SWARN, the Scottish Women and the Arts Research Network, of which I am a member.

Celebrating Joan Eardley

My talk accompanies the second instalment of the display ‘Celebrating Joan Eardley‘, which runs at the Hunterian until 8 May 2022. This focuses on the artist’s paintings in Glasgow University’s collection, which include the double-sided Glasgow Close / A Cottage by the Sea and The Cornfield, both above. I will discuss the life-time and posthumous collecting of Eardley’s work by public collections throughout the UK, from the Highlands to Hampshire. A related post about collecting Joan Eardley can be found here, this one sheds light on SWARN and its activities and I list events in which I am involved on this page.
