Queen of Edinburgh: Anne Redpath and her Circle

I am delighted to be giving the lecture ‘Queen of Edinburgh: Anne Redpath and her Circle‘ for EDFAS (Edinburgh Decorative and Fine Arts Society) at the Scottish National Gallery on 21 September 2022, sponsored by Lyon & Turnbull.

Queen of Edinburgh

Anne Redpath (1895-1965) is widely recognised as the doyenne of post-World War Two Scottish painting. She is renowned for joyously coloured still-lifes and interiors which reveal her pleasure in beautiful objects and the decoration of her home. Regular foreign travel provided stimulating subject matter, including for landscape paintings which were included in frequent solo and group exhibitions.

Redpath occupied a central position within the Scottish art world, not least as the first female painter to be elected a full member of the Royal Scottish Academy and as a popular hostess in her New Town flat, where she lived between 1952 until her death in 1965. This talk will celebrate her professional success as well as her friendships with other leading modern Scottish artists, including William Gillies, David McClure and Robin Philipson.

EDFAS

The charity EDFAS was founded in 1970. Its aims are the advancement of arts education and appreciation and the preservation of artistic heritage for the benefit of the public. Its lecture and events programmes support these aims and the funds thereby raised are available for charitable donations. Initiatives for young people are prioritised, as well as access and support in general, often working in partnership with local institutions. My talk is the Society’s Annual Lecture and is their most important fund-raising event. For further information and to book tickets, please click on this link.
