A Scottish Colourists Book
Back in July 2024 I received an unexpected email from the National Galleries of Scotland Publishing Department asking if I might be interested in writing a book about the Scottish Colourists. I said yes! The past two years have been spent in a happy daze of research in libraries and archives from Perth to London, writing, editing and proofing. The resultant book ‘tells the story of the interwoven lives of Sameul John Peploe, John Duncan Fergusson, George Leslie Huner and Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell … [who] … were bound together by friendship and an immersion in progressive French art, which resulted in their use of bold design, beautiful brushwork and, above all, brilliant colour.’ (book jacket blurb). The quartet are nown know as the ‘Scottish Colourists’ and their work continues to delight to this day.
Publication Day Celebrations!
To mark the launch of The Scottish Colourists: Art and Life, I shall be signing copies ‘hot off the press’ on its publication day of Thursday 24 September 2026. You can find me in the Scottish National Gallery shop on The Mound, Edinburgh between 2pm and 4pm. Please join me in dressing colourfully to make the occasion if you’d like to.
