The Scottish Colourists in St Andrews
First of all, I shall be heading to Topping & Company Booksellers in St Andrews, where I think I will have my first experience of seeing the book on sale in a bookshop! The talk poster features the book cover showing a details of Tulips – The Blue Jug of c.1919 by Samuel John Peploe, which is in the Scottish national collection. It isn’t widely known that the American James Huntington Whyte (1909-62) established The Gallery in St Andrews in the early 1930s, where he held an exhibition of contemporary Scottish painting in 1935. It included works by Peploe, J. D. Fergusson and George Leslie Hunter (but not the fourth Scottish Colourist, F. C. B. Cadell) so I may bring that up. The talk is at 7.30pm on Tuesday 6 October 2026. Hot off the Press in Perth!
The day after I shall be making my way to Perth Art Gallery. The book will have been published just two weeks before and so we have called the event ‘Hot off the Press!’. It accompanies Culture Perth and Kinross’s exhibition The Scottish Colourists Revealed, which consists of works by Cadell, Fergusson, Hunter and Peploe which are rarely seen in public. The talk poster features a photo of me standing beside Still Life of c.1913 by Peploe in the Scottish national collection. The talk will be a happy return to the Gallery, after I was ‘in conversation‘ with Rhona Corbett, Head of Museums and Collections at CPK about the Scottish Colourists back in June 2026.
