I shall be giving a Scottish Colourists talk for Toppings in Edinburgh on 29 September 2026. I shall be discussing my National Galleries of Scotland book, The Scottish Colourists: Art and Life, which will be just five days old by then!

The Scottish Colourists: Art and Life
My new book tells the story of the interwoven lives of Samuel John Peploe, John Duncan Fergusson, George Leslie Hunter and Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell. They were bound together by friendship and an immersion in progressive French art, which resulted in their use of bold design, beautiful brushwork and – above all – brilliant colour. Individually and collectively the quartet were the torchbearers of modern art in Scotland and are the nation’s most celebrated artists of the twentieth century.

The Scottish Colourists at The Royal Scots Club
The talk will be held at The Royal Scots Club in Edinburgh. This is a particularly fitting venue as Cadell served as a Private with the 9th Battalion, The Royal Scots, during the First World War.
