An Artful Life with Katy Hessel

I am looking forward to interviewing Katy Hessel about her new book How to Live an Artful Life, at a Topping & Company Booksellers event in St Andrews on Monday 10 November 2025.

Katy Hessel

Katy came to prominence with her 2022 book The Story of Art without Men, which became a Sunday Times and New York Times bestseller. Its publisher, Penguins Books UK, described it as ‘the history of art as it’s never been told before’. They explained that by reading it you would ‘discover the glittering Sofonisba Anguissola of the Renaissance, the radical work of Harriet Powers in the nineteenth-century USA and the artist who really invented the Readymade’ and could ‘explore the Dutch Golden Age, the astonishing work of post-War artists in Latin America and the women artists defining art in the 2020s’ whilst having ‘your sense of art history overturned, and your eyes opened to many art forms often overlooked or dismissed.’

How to Live an Artful Life

In addition to being an author, Katy is an art historian, curator and broadcaster. Her new book was published yesterday and this time Penguin Books UK declare that it allows you to ‘dive into the year with the wisdom of artists’. They promise that it will lead the reader ‘through the months of the year offering you thoughts, reflections and encouragements from artists such as Marina Abramovic, Nan Goldin, Lubaina Himid, Louise Bourgeois and many more.’ I shall begin the event by asking her to read the entry for 10 November and see where it leads us.
